Sams, Carl

Carl R. Sams II is a professional wildlife photographer from Michigan. His photographs have appeared in both national and internation publications such as the Italian magazine Airone (Italy's answer to National Geographic), the French magazine Terre Sauvage, Audubon, Birder's World and hundreds of other magazines. 

Sams is the recipient of both the People's Choice Awards in the 1990 Northern Wildlife Art Expo and the 1990 Michigan Wildlife Art Festival, the first photographic art so honored at a major wildlife art festival.

Since 1982, Sams has photographed one particular family of white-tailed deer; some of his 40,000 photographs of this deer family were featured in a thirty-page photographic essay in Audubon magazine in 1987. Sams' deer photographs, widely exhibited, have been called the most remarkable and extraordinarily beautiful deer images captured on color film. He and his wife, Jean Stoick, authored and published the award-winning children's bestseller, Stranger in the Woods: A Photographic Fantasy. Mill Pond Press
